Analysts polled by Reuters had expected January shipments to rise 3.3 percent after a dismal 2016 that saw exports slump 7.7 percent due to stubbornly weak global demand. In a statement, BHP Billiton said that it intends to stop production at the mine due to the strike as it can not guarantee the safety of 80 workers who have been permitted by the government to stay at the mine to undertake critical duties. Chris Williamson, Markit's chief economist, said optimism about the year ahead was at the highest since last March. Once the deal is completed, Rio Tinto will also be entitled to potential royalties.
