Powerful 7.6 Magnitude Quake Occurs on Iran-Iraq Border

Magnitude 7.3 earthquake hits Iraq, Iran

A magnitude 7.4 natural disaster hit an area at the Iranian-Iraqi border on Sunday, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) reported.

"An quake this strong can easily cause severe damage to even well-constructed buildings", AccuWeather Meteorologist Renee Duff said.

Iranian TV said Iraqi officials have reported at least six people dead on Iraq's side of the border from Sunday's quake. Eight villages were damaged.

Photos and videos of extensive damage in both Iran and Iraq poured in on social media shortly after the quake.

The quake-hit area is also around 200km northeast of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad.

Witnesses said buildings being evacuated as they shook violently.

Iraq's Meteorological Organization issued a warning on state TV urging people to stay away from buildings and to avoid from using elevators, CNN reported.

An quake rattled the Iran-Iraq border on November 12, 2017. "But then I heard everyone around me screaming 'Earthquake!'"

Turkey has become the first country to offer help upon the quake, a tweet from the autonomous Northern Iraq's Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) said.

No casualties have yet to be reported.

The district's main hospital was severely damaged and had no power, Rasheed said, so the injured were being taken to Sulaimaniyah for treatment.
