Lebanon is 'declaring war' on Saudi Arabia, Saudi minister says

OPINION- Iran threat over Saudi Arabia growing

Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Iran-backed Hezbollah, said there should be no political escalation in response to Hariri's declaration on Saturday, which was made from Saudi Arabia and came as surprise even to his aides. The UNIFIL mandate was extended in September 2017, a step that the UN chief welcomed and expressed confidence that it will have a role in supporting a peaceful political environment in Lebanon.

Saudi King Salman met former Lebanese Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri, Saudi-owned Al Arabiya television reported on Monday, without providing details.

- Yemeni rebels fired a missile targeting the international airport in the Saudi capital of Riyadh, and Saudi Arabia accused Iran of supplying the missile, saying that could be "considered an act of war".

The Houthis' missile launch increased tensions, and Saudi Arabia responded by intensifying its blockade of Yemen, raising fears an already dire humanitarian situation will get worse. But it has succeeded in killing thousands of innocent people, displacing millions, and helping Tehran position itself as the defender of the oppressed in the Middle East.

All three of these developments will have seismic implications, not just on Saudi Arabia, but on the region and beyond.

The prime minister must be a Sunni in Lebanon's sectarian system.

Still, the kingdom is trying to hold influence in the mainly Sunni areas that remain out of Assad's hands.

Nasrallah said he would not comment on accusations levelled against Hezbollah by Hariri, describing his resignation announcement as a Saudi statement.

- Saudi Arabia seems to have acted to wreck Lebanon's government that includes Iran's powerful ally, Hezbollah.

Earlier in the day, Lebanese President Michel Aoun called for cooperation among all Lebanese forces following Hariri's resignation, in order to reinforce stability.

Born in Saudi Arabia, Hariri was running the family's vast Oger construction firm in the kingdom when his father was assassinated in February 2005.

As the clock inched to midnight another bombshell was dropped; this time by the Saudis: A royal decree ordering the arrest of several princes, billionaires, and notable figures, as well as the sacking of senior government officials. Israel is not interested in escalation in the near future, and the same is true of Hezbollah.

In the extended UNIFIL mandate, the Security Council renewed the mission with new instructions for more patrols with Lebanese forces and detailed reports when peacekeepers run into roadblocks in Hezbollah's strongholds in southern Lebanon. "If the Saudis are right and it limits Hezbollah and Iran, Israel will gain".
