Netflix Email Scam Targets Millions Of Subscribers

According to the Mailguard Blog, there is an easy way to spot the scam: for whatever reason, while the email addresses of Netflix users were successfully acquired by the scammers, the first names of the users were not.

"Of course, this website is completely bogus and is just a mechanism for the scammers to steal the victim's identity and credit card information", the site wrote.

Millions of Netflix users are now being targeted by an updated version of a scam that has been doing the rounds since past year.

Deadline reports 110 million Netflix users have been targeted by the phishing emails that prompt them to update account information.

Though the email looks very convincing, on a closer look, it does give away some hints such as odd wording and unwanted request for such sensitive information.

In order to reduce your chances of being affected, Mr Marshall said filters for your inbox and a layered security system are vital to ensure you don't fall victim.

The fake websites involved use the Netflix logo and images from shows like "The Crown" and "House of Cards" to make them seem more legitimate, Deadline said.

The fake emails also inform users that their accounts are about to be cancelled. The well-designed, individualized fake email convinces customers to update their account information to avoid suspension.

This screen shot from Mailguard shows what you are likely to see if you click on the link in the email. For more tips on how to do this, Mailguard is full of ideas - and for starters, as they suggest, "Always hover your mouse over links within emails and check the domain they're pointing to".
