Florida State University bans Greek life after student death

Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity

Alcohol may have played a role in the death of Andrew Coffey, a civil engineering student, who was trying to become a member of the FSU chapter of Pi Kappa Phi, Tallahassee Police said in a video released Monday.

Andrew Coffey, 20, of Pompano Beach, Fla., was found unresponsive at about 10:25 a.m. Friday at a home and pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel, Tallahassee police said, as reported by the Tallahassee Democrat.

Another fraternity member, Garrett John Marcy, 20, was charged Monday with the sale and trafficking of cocaine. During the interim suspension, fraternities and sororities are banned from from holding new member events, meetings, tailgates, socials, philanthropic events, retreats, intramural sports and organized participation in certain events, though members are allowed to remain as residents in their fraternity or sorority house. "There must be a new culture, and our students must be full participants in creating it".

"For this suspension to end, there will need to be a new normal for Greek Life at the university".

"I want to send a serious message, I really do", said Thrasher. "We've got a serious problem".

The fraternity has been suspended by its national organization pending the conclusion of the investigation.

TPD spokesman David Northway said Friday evening that several people were being questioned in connection with the death but no one has been arrested.

Florida State is at least the third university this year to suspend Greek life because of alcohol-related tragedies. And they're part of the solution.
