Andrew Luck Placed On Injured Reserve, Colts Blamed For Quarterback's Setback

Colts general manager Chris Ballard announced that Andrew Luck will not play in 2017

Instead, in his impromptu press conference, new general manager Chris Ballard said that Luck will return to his rehabilitation program for the rest of the season, where he will look to regain strength and flexibility in his surgically repaired throwing shoulder.

In the meantime, Jacoby Brissett will continue to replace Luck in the lineup as the Colts search for another backup. The Colts are 2-6 with the toughest part of their schedule still awaiting them. The Colts also would have a potential trade chip - Luck, Brissett or the new quarterback - that might pay dividends down the road no matter how things unfold.

He played in seven games in 2015, fought through injuries to play 15 games in 2016, and will now miss all of 2017.

Translation: The Colts are facing the possibility of Luck never playing again at a high level and being on the hook for $87 million in salary guaranteed against injury.

"Sources close to the #Colts say that QB Andrew Luck's shoulder is so bad that amputation may be required", one user joked.

The 2017 season goes down as a washout for Luck and, nearly surely, the Colts.

But on October 18, Colts general manager Chris Ballard announced Luck would be held out of practice after he had a cortisone injection to address some soreness in his surgically-repaired right shoulder. Luck and Griffin were taken first and second overall in that draft, and it appeared at the time that their on-field exploits would be chronicled side by side for, oh, roughly a decade or two. The doctors have told the Colts to have patience with the rehab process, he said.

Ballard dismissed any notion that Luck's career is in jeopardy, however. The job is his to roll with, knowing Luck isn't walking back into the huddle until next season. Grigson was criticized for failing to assemble a better offensive line to safeguard the franchise quarterback.

Luck responded with one of the best seasons of his career - completing a career-best 63.5 percent of his passes, finishing with 4,240 yards, 31 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. This is the right thing to do for him and the right thing to do for the organization.
