There's A Massive Hole In The Middle Of The Great Pyramid

Nagoya's muon emulsions film set up in Khufu Queen s Chamber

Could the Great Pyramid of Giza hold even more secrets of the ancient world? While erosion has reduced its initial 481-foot height to just over 455 feet, the pyramid was the tallest man-made structure in the world for the 3,800 years directly following its construction around 2560 BC.

An worldwide team of researchers identified a large internal cavity at least 30 metres long above the Grand Gallery - a steeply slanted passageway which connects two other chambers, known as the "Queen's Chamber" and the "King's Chamber". There is also an unfinished chamber cut into the bedrock upon which the monument was built.

"Having said that we should be very cautious at this point of going too far beyond the observation of the void, because at this point it needs more research and identification of its orientation and dimensions". "We know that [it] has the same characteristics as the Grand Gallery - which is an 8-metre-high structure, 47 metres long".

To this day, the Egyptian pyramids remain a marvel of engineering with archaeologists still racking their brains to figure out how the ancient Egyptians were able to carry out such an endeavur.

Scientists do not yet know the role the void played in the Great Pyramid's construction, or its use.

The objective of the space is unclear, and it is not yet known whether it was built with a function in mind or if it is merely a gap in the pyramid's architecture. "We don't know if this void is made by one structure or several successive structures", said Mehdi Tayoubi from the HIP Institute, Paris. The technology relies on high-energy cosmic rays, which shoot subatomic particles called muons toward the ground.

A symbol of the awesome power of ancient Egypt, the Great Pyramid is 479 feet tall, the tallest structure built by man until the Eiffel Tower in 1889.

The Verge laid out a succinct, easy to understand, and extremely radical-sounding explanation of muons: "Muons are produced when the cosmic rays that permeate our Universe and pummel our atmosphere break down - creating a kind of subatomic confetti that rains down on Earth at nearly the speed of light".

The scattering of the muons was recorded on an extremely sensitive photographic medium known as nuclear emulsion film, which had been positioned in the Queen's chamber, inside the pyramid.

"It's very clear what they found as a void doesn't mean anything at all".

He added that using the technique to investigate other pyramids could help reveal their significance: "This work has the potential to convert locally important monuments into internationally important sites".
