Care Quality Commission review finds that child mental health services are fragmented

The review however focuses on a number of mental health standards that can be adopted across all workplaces at little or no cost and urges employers of all sizes to commit to these six core standards around mental health.

Paul Farmer, the chief executive of the leading mental health charity Mind, said the problem is made worse by the way mental health remains a "taboo subject" in many workplaces.

And, the report into mental illness, commissioned by Prime Minister Theresa May, also claims poor mental health costs the United Kingdom economy up to £99billion each year.

It includes a detailed analysis that explores the significant cost of poor mental health to United Kingdom businesses and the economy as a whole.

The NHS and the Civil Service, two of the country's largest employers, have already announced that they will abide by the recommendations that apply to them - meaning that more than two million public sector workers will receive tailored in-house mental health support. CQC has drawn on existing reports, research and other evidence and its inspections of children and young people's mental health services, as well as conversations with young people to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the current system. A report by Business in the Community, in partnership with MHFA England and Mind, found that as many as 1.2 million United Kingdom employees have faced demotion, disciplinary or dismissal, after disclosing their mental health issues at work.

As most employers will recognise, sickness management procedures can be long, expensive and frustrating for all parties, in particular where mental health issues are involved. The most important recommendation is that all employers, regardless of size or industry, should adopt 6 "mental health core standards" that lay basic foundations for an approach to workplace mental health.

Prime Minister Theresa May has vowed to follow up on the report's recommendations.

The report reveals that the United Kingdom is facing a mental health challenge in the workplace that is much larger than had previously been thought.
