New Study Shows Link Between Gut Bacteria And Breast Cancer

Plant-based diet converts breast cancer in mice from lethal to treatable form

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women in the USA, affecting one in every eight women.

"We have developed new methods to try and predict what these genetic variants are doing and what genes they are acting on".

Of the variants uncovered by the team and reported in the journals Nature and Nature Genetics, 65 are common variants that predispose to breast cancer and a further seven predispose specifically to oestrogen-receptor negative breast cancer - the subset of cases that do not respond to hormonal therapies, such as the drug tamoxifen. Fortunately, today's breast cancer screening technology has advanced tremendously since 1985, and since I was diagnosed with cancer more than 11 years ago. Scientists say that efforts to uncover genetic mutations for breast cancer in Latino, Asian, African and Middle Eastern background are still underway.

"Information on these variants could be combined with other strong breast cancer risk factors, such as age, family history and mammographic density to provide more precise estimates of risk", said Associate Professor Roger Milne, epidemiology director of Cancer Council Victoria.

For the breast cancer study, researchers examined the tissue of 78 patients who underwent mastectomies related to breast cancer.

Breast cancer is caused by complex interactions between genetic variants and environmental factors.

Yet breast cancer is still one of the most deadly forms of cancer for many women in the U.S., coming second only to lung cancer for some demographic groups.

The studies involved collaborators from 300 different institutions, including the University of Cambridge, University Laval in Quebec and Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health.

In 2017, it is estimated that 17,586 women and 144 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer, according to Breast Cancer Network Australia.

Others, known as oestrogen-receptor negative, are not affected by the hormone and are more hard to treat.

While studying 21,468 ER-negative cases, the researchers identified 10 new gene mutations that could explain approximately 1.5 of the heritable risk of ER-negative breast cancer.

"Some of the variations are protective, others increase the risk". Vitamin D levels also have a significant bearing on the development of breast cancer, "Higher blood levels of vitamin D are associated with a lower risk of breast cancer compared to women with low levels of the vitamin".

Saturday's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk on City Island drew more than 6,000 participants and raised more than $650,000, the American Cancer Society announced Tuesday.
