Egyptian policemen, troops killed in clashes with militants

According to news agencies, quoting security sources, the 16 police officers were killed in a shoot-out on Friday during a raid on a suspected militant hideout in Egypt's Western desert.

The statement added that the Interior Ministry's National Security Service received information about the location of risky militants taking shelter in the Western Desert's kilo 135, and then a raid was ordered to be launched.

Earlier reports said that 14 police officers were killed and eight others injured during the clashes.

Militants of Velayat Sinai, a local affiliate of the ISIS Takfiri terrorist group, still target security forces in the restive Sinai Peninsula while they continue to pose threats to the Coptic Christians in other provinces.

Fifteen militants, who were reported to belong to an extremist group called Hasm, also died in the attack.

Meanwhile, security raids killed hundreds of militants and arrested a similar number of suspects as part of the country's anti-terror war.

The policemen were killed in the exchange of fire with terrorists late yesterday in el-Wahat desert in Giza governorate, about 135 kilometres from the capital.

A convoy of four 4x4 vehicles and one interior ministry vehicle was ambushed from higher ground by the fighters firing rocket-propelled grenades and detonating explosive devices, a senior source in the Giza Security Office said.

No group immediately claimed involvement in Friday's attack.

The country has been in a heightened state of turmoil and violence since the military overthrew President Mohammed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood, the country's first democratically-elected president, in mid-2013 following mass protests against his rule.
