Donald Trump pledges to release John F. Kennedy's assassination files

Warren Commission Exhibits 2966a and Exhibit 2966b Lee Harvey Oswald distributing

"I applaud the fact that President Trump is releasing these documents", presidential historian Douglas Brinkley says.

The trove is expected to include more than 3000 documents that have never before been seen by the public, and more than 30,000 that have previously been released but with redactions.

Actually, the release of the CIA and Federal Bureau of Investigation documents has been scheduled for a quarter of a century by law (the Kennedy Assassination Records Collection Act), but according to reports, some in the intelligence community had suggested keeping at least some of the documents under wraps for national security purposes, a power the President has.

Mr Trump had the power to block the release of the documents, and intelligence agencies are thought to have pressured him to do so for at least some of them.

In response to his announcement Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia Center for Politics and author of a book about Kennedy, tweeted back: 'Thank you. "Please do not allow exceptions for any agency of government". JFK files have been hidden too long'. These documents filed by the CIA, FBI, and Justice Dept. have been held and may prove to conspiracy theorists whether of not Oswald acted alone.

While the documents are set to give closure to a monumental moment in American history, Kennedy assassination experts don't believe they'll contain any "bombshell" revelations, according to the Post. Lee Harvey Oswald was convicted of his murder, with the Warren Commission appointed by Kennedy's successor, Lyndon Johnson, finding he acted alone.

"There could be some jewels in there because our level of knowledge in the 1990s is maybe different from today", said Judge John Tunheim, who was chairman of the agency who determined the fate of public assassination records.

At the weekend, President Donald Trump announced on Twitter he did not plan to stand in the way of the scheduled release.

The President, no stranger to conspiracy theories himeslf, may also have a personal interest in some of the released documents.

Even Trump has accused America of plotting his predecessor's death, telling Fox News in 2016 that he believed the father of Republican Senator Ted Cruz had consorted with Oswald right before the shooting. "It sheds very bad light on the deep state".
