Storm Brian: Northern Ireland forecast to void worst of 'weather bomb'

Storm Brian vs Twitter: Puppy fights blistering winds as Porthcawl coast takes a battering

Storm Brian is the result of a "weather bomb" of low pressure in the Atlantic Ocean.

Storm Brian is expected to hit Co.

Gale force winds of up to 130km per hour are sweeping across Galway and the west coast this morning and many areas have seen flash flooding.

"Winds are forecast to be strongest on the southern and western coasts of England, Wales and Ireland, as well as southern Irish Sea coasts, and on both sides of the English Channel".

While Co. Tipperary is not included in the list of counties with high-wind warnings, neighbouring counties Clare, Cork, and Waterford are.

A dramatic live stream from Portcawl Lifeboats showed waves crashing over the pier this morning as the strong winds begin to take hold in the southern parts of Wales.

Met Office spokesman Grahame Madge said waves on the coast could also pose a threat to life as Storm Brian moves in tomorrow, and warned against anyone tempted to pose for "storm selfies".

"Gusts exceeding 50mph are expected widely within the warning area, with gusts of around 70mph along exposed coastal areas".

Alison Baptiste, national flood duty manager for the Environment Agency, warned the public against social media stunts during the bad weather.

"We urge people to stay safe along the coast and warn against putting yourself in unnecessary danger by taking 'storm selfies" or driving through flood water - just 30cm is enough to move your vehicle'.

"Environment Agency teams are on the ground checking defences and taking precautionary measures such as closing tidal gates".

The strong winds will also coincide with high tides "bringing the potential for unsafe waves", according to Met Office meteorologist Aiden McGivern.

The Energy Networks Association, representing the UK's energy infrastructure, also reminded residents to call the free 105 advice telephone number in case of damage to local networks and power supplies.

Check in with the website and follow the progress of Storm Brian live as it hits Ireland and Kilkenny this weekend.
