7 policemen killed, 22 hurt in explosion in Pakistan

At least 6 killed 22 injured in Quetta blast

According to first-hand accounts of the witnesses, it was a suicide blast, which was later confirmed by the police.

The Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan claimed responsibility for the attack.

Security forces have reached the location and cordoned off the area, and a security sweep is underway, he said.

Death toll might further rise as seven of the injured people were in critical condition, said hospital sources.

The nature of the blast has yet to be ascertained.

He said that a forensic team will come to Quetta from Lahore, adding that the road will blocked until forensic samples are collected.

Chief Minister Sanaullah Zehri told reporters that the bomb contained 80 kilogrammes of explosive material.

Abdul Salam was shot multiple times, police said.

Rescue teams immediately rushed to the spot and shifted bodies and the injured persons to Quetta Civil Hospital. An investigation has been launched into the attack.

Also Wednesday, a roadside bombing near a tribal area along the border with Afghanistan killed two troops.

Security forces are frequently attacked by militants in the province.

CONDEMNATIONS: Condemnations started pouring in from all over the country following the blast.

A local commander of the Pakistani Taliban, Sharyar Mahsud, said his men were responsible for the attack. The participants prayed peace to the departed souls and wished early recovery to the injured. "Balochistan is on the forefront of this fight and we will not stop until there is not a single terrorist left in the area", the home minister added. He also said that these cowardly attacks would not hinder the security forces in executing their duties.

Pakistani leaders, including Imran Khan, and members of the civil society condemned the attack, praying for the victims. They expressed a deep sense of sorrow over the loss of precious human lives in the tragic incident.

A police inspector was gunned down by unidentified assailants on Quetta's Qambrani road on Wednesday, shortly after an explosion targeting a police vehicle.

Fifteen people, including eight soldiers, were killed when a suicide bomber targeted a military truck near the Pishin bus stop in Quetta on August 13.

At least 22 people, including civilians, were injured in the attack, Khan said.
