Sensex rises to 32643 points; Nifty crosses the 10000 mark

It however failed to maintain record levels on profit-booking, and settled at new high of 10,230.85, up 63.40 points, or 0.62 per cent. It surpassed its previous record closing of 10,153.10 hit on September 18.

The 30-share barometer pushed higher by 233.48 points, or 0.72 percent, to 32,666.17 after moving in range of 32,687.32 and 32477.47.

The Nifty has soared by 24 per cent and the BSE Sensex by 22 per cent so far this year.

Bharat Financial Inclusion gained 2 percent after the board of IndusInd Bank approved the merger between the bank and microfinance firm Bharat Financial Inclusion.

Sector-wise, the S&P BSE banking index surged by 365.34 points, followed by metal index by 167.34 points and telecom index by 74.87 points.

Among the top Sensex gainers: Bharti Airtel rose 5 percent, Mahindra and Mahindra added 3 percent, Hindustan Unilever gained 2.6 percent while Tata Motors advanced 2.9 percent. The wholesale inflation rate was at 1.36 per cent during Sepetember 2016.
