Building Collapse in Southern India Reportedly Kills Six People

6 killed as cylinder blast brings down building several feared trapped

At least seven people have died and a few more are feared trapped after a building collapsed in the Ejipura area of Bengaluru on the morning of Monday, October 16.

It was first thought a cylinder blast had caused the collapse but the Karnataka home minister Ramalinga Reddy seemed to refute the theory.

While initial reports claimed that the collapse had happened due to an LPG cylinder blast, Reddy later told reporters: "Cylinders on both the ground and first floors had no gas in them, so it is unlikely that the buildings collapsed due to a blast". Two others, Hariprasad and Kalyani were severely injured in the mishap and they were rescued and taken to a private hospital.

The residential buildings partially collapsed at a congested locality in Ejipura area of Bengaluru, the capital city of Karnataka.

The deceased have been identified as Kalavati (69), Ravi Chandra (48), Hari Prasad (19), Pavan Kalyan (18), Ashwini, and Saravana. The three-storey building, which is more than 30 years old collapsed due to the explosion.

Personnel of the fire brigade and National Disaster Response Force recovered the bodies including that of two women. He had rented it out to four families.

Three fire-fighters clearing debris were injured when a wall fell on them.

Bengaluru Mayor R Sampath Raj said four families were residing in the building.

The government has announced a compensation of Rs five lakh each for the kin of the deceased. At least 40 fire-fighters and NDRF personnel were engaged in the rescue operations.
