Trump Justice Department says Chicago violated immigration rules on earlier grant

Sessions Says Connecticut Is In Compliance With Immigration Information-Sharing Law

The Department of Justice has determined CT is in compliance with a law requiring the sharing of immigration information with federal authorities, affirming a belief held by top state officials. "As such, we continue to state unambiguously that Chapter 41.6.1 does not restrict officers and employees from requesting information regarding immigration status from federal immigration officers".

"We welcome immigrants to the city of Philadelphia", Kenney said. In May, Sessions threatened that non-compliant cities could see grants withheld or "clawed back", or be barred from receiving grants in the future. JAG stands for Justice Assistance Grant.

"Jurisdictions that adopt so-called "sanctuary policies" also adopt the view that the protection of criminal aliens is more important than the protection of law-abiding citizens and of the rule of law", Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in a statement.

"Instead of fear-mongering and false accusations, we urge you to work with mayors across the nation to tackle violent crime through smart, evidence-based policing", Landrieu said. It's not DOJ policy to track the immigration status of crime victims, but some victims, they argued, are also perpetrators of crime and should have their immigration status shared with the federal government.

The feds are giving what they call a "last chance" warning to NY that the city's immigrant-friendly policies may cost it federal grants.

In a statement Thursday, Mayor Mitch Landrieu says the DOJ confirmed the city's compliance.

They are: Chicago, New Orleans, New York City, Philadelphia and Cook County, Ill.

The section Sessions references, Section 1373, is a federal statute barring local and state governments from limiting communication regarding residents' immigration or citizenship status with federal officials.

In addition, Philadelphia is suing over other new requirements for policing grants that Sessions imposed on cities in July, aimed at punishing sanctuary cities. In the letter, the department did not specify what would happen if the city failed to do so. Eddie Johnson and Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, dated October 11, comes as Attorney General Jeff Sessions is appealing a September order by a federal judge - in a case filed by the city of Chicago - blocking the Trump administration's efforts to keep fiscal year 2017 grant money from sanctuary cities.

Justice Department grants are contingent on cities agreeing to share information with the feds on individuals' immigration status and giving 48-hour notice before releasing from jail an undocumented immigrant accused of committing a crime. The Justice Department is appealing the ruling, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Several U.S. cities and counties passed local laws or enacted procedures that prohibit law enforcement from notifying Homeland Security when an undocumented immigrant is identified or arrested.
