Amazon Embraces Teen Shoppers; With Parent's Permission

Amazon now lets teenagers shop via separate logins attached to their parents' accounts

(An annual Amazon Prime Student membership costs $49, compared with $99 for regular members.) Amazon, which had annual revenue of $136 billion a year ago, accounts for roughly one-third of all online US sales. The invitation will be sent to parents via text message or email. Parents will also choose a payment method and shipping addresses their teen can use when buying items.

Amazon launched Households in 2015 in order to install more control over the ways people were sharing their Prime accounts with friends and family, and this is an evolution of that move. And more trusting parents can elect to sidestep the per-item approval process and simply set an overall maximum budget. Through the Amazon App, teens can now shop or stream content while parents will have the right to approve all orders or preapprove spending limits for the child. By default, parents approve every order. Teens can also be assigned pre-set spending limits per order as an alternative to having orders reviewed.

"The teen can also include a personalized note like, 'This is the book I need for class, '" the company said.

On this page, there's now a new option to add a teen, as well as configure the settings associated with their account.

Amazon is giving teenagers a bit of independence by allowing them to place their own orders under their own login while using their parent (s) Prime subscription.

Reflecting how kids use the internet these days, the new shopping system only works through the Amazon mobile app. In this case, the parent will receive a notification with an itemized list of the order, and the option remains to cancel it or initiate a refund if it is too late to cancel. Amazon's new teen accounts offer a safe way for older kids to get started with online shopping - and hopefully, learn some shopping lessons so they don't max out their credit cards when they start shopping on their own.
