Packers RB Ty Montgomery's injury not as bad as Green Bay thought

Sep 18 2016 Minneapolis MN USA Green Bay Packers tackle Bryan Bulaga blocks Minnesota Vikings defensive end Danielle Hunter in the third quarter at U.S. Bank Stadium. The Vikings win 17-14

Earlier, the Packers lost Montgomery on their first drive Thursday due to broken ribs.

For the Green Bay Packers, good injury news often comes with a grain of salt. Rookie Aaron Jones performed admirably against Chicago, with 13 carries for 49 yards and a touchdown, but if Montgomery misses significant time and Williams is not able to get right the Packers may be forced to see what's out there at running back.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Ty Montgomery's rib injury is not as serious as initially thought. In the end, we'll have a better bearing on his ability to suit up once the Packers release their first Week 5 injury report Wednesday. While Montgomery is a converted wide receiver, he tallied 457 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the ground past year and helped bolster what was otherwise an uninspiring ground game after Eddie Lacy's injury.

On the opening series, Ty Montgomery carried five times for 28 yards before heading to the locker room.

A three-down back with the size and skills to make plays between the tackles or on the outside, Jones has a fantastic combination of physical and mental tools that made him one of the more complete backs in this year's deep draft class. After Montgomery and Williams went down, Jones rushed for 12 yards and a 2-yard touchdown in the first half against the Bears. He'll be relied on to keep Green Bay's offense balanced next week while the rest of their depth chart heals up.
