Dallas Cowboys players and owner take a knee before national anthem

The Dallas Cowboys led by owner Jerry Jones center take a knee before the national anthem in advance of their NFL football game Monday against the Arizona Cardinals in Glendale Ariz. As NFL players plan another weekend of protests around the national

Players will stand for Country!' the president tweeted.

Before the game, the Cowboys and Cardinals added their voices to the wave of protests against racism and division across the United States as the players collectively took a knee.

Daron Roberts, director of the Center for Sports Leadership and Innovation at the University of Texas at Austin, and a former National Football League coach, says he thinks players will continue with game day protests.

Moments before the start of the game the Cowboys, nicknamed "America's team", all took a knee with owner Jerry Jones, a fervent supporter of President Trump.

Trump ignited a firestorm of controversy this weekend after he called for kneeling players to be fired while speaking on Friday evening in Alabama. You will stand, with your hand over your heart and with respect, when our Country's National Anthem is being played or you will no longer be a Dallas Cowboy, a Coach for the Dallas Cowboys, or have any association with the Dallas Cowboy Organization!

On Wednesday, the president said via Twitter that he had spoken with Jones, tweeting in part: "Jerry is a victor who knows how to get things done".

President Donald Trump tweeted about the NFL for a fifth consecutive day, this time saying he spoke with Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones about his desire for players to stand for the national anthem. "Big progress being made-we all love our country!"

2 sources told @nbcdfw President Trump blew up Jerry's cell Monday calling him 4 times throughout the day to talk about anthem stuff. Wow.

"For people to disrespect [the military] by kneeling during the playing of the national anthem, I think is disgraceful", Trump said. As you probably know Jones was harsh in criticizing the players and teams that knelt during the anthem.

After Monday's game, Jones explained his team's actions.

"I can't say enough about the understanding and the awareness of our team and these young men that basically said, 'That makes sense".

The protests started more than a year ago when former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick refused to stand during the anthem as a protest over police treatment of minorities.
