Rihanna urges Donald Trump to help the people of Puerto Rico

Total Devastation in Puerto Rico After Maria

Large numbers of generators are now on Island.

Shortly before meeting Trump Thursday, Acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Elaine Duke issued a statement saying, "This waiver will ensure that over the next ten days, all options are available to move and distribute goods to the people of Puerto Rico".

The death toll was not as bad as the scores killed by Hurricane Irma - Maria claimed more than 30 lives in the Caribbean, including at least 16 in Puerto Rico.

However, other people were able to provide a more convincing reason why more ships weren't necessary-videos like the one below show that aid is being delivered to Puerto Rico, but their infrastructure is so devastated they can't take supplies from the port to more remote areas.

Gov. Rick Scott says he will visit Puerto Rico on Thursday and that Florida stands ready to help the island recover from Hurricane Maria.

The 1,000-bed US Navy hospital ship Comfort will arrive next week, after sailing from its home port in Virginia on Friday.

Critics of the law call it a protectionist relic, and the Wall Street Journal editorialized this week that it should be permanently repealed.

Several politicians have pointed out that it is much more expensive to ship goods to Puerto Rican ports than it is in nearby Jamaica or the Dominican Republic.

Republican senator John McCain said: "These emergency waivers have been valuable to speed up recovery efforts in the impacted regions".

Trump told reporters Wednesday that his administration was looking at a new waiver, but he said, "We have a lot of shippers and a lot of people and a lot of people that work in the shipping industry that don't want the Jones Act lifted".

Here's what you need to know about the Jones Act.

"Puerto Ricans are without food, clean water and electricity", she said.

Pruchniewski said volunteers are already using the tool to mark danger zones and help relief groups to prioritize assistance.

"The situation on the island is perilous and reporting on the sustained damage and dangers is hard at best", Esri Industry Manager Ryan Lanclos said in a statement.

"We've got to just keep being creative and thinking, OK, so what are the needs?"

In the wake of the devastation in Puerto Rico caused by Hurricane Maria, San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz - along with other United States politicians, including McCain and Marco Rubio, R-Florida - had urged the suspension of the Jones Act in order to speed up supply deliveries.
