NFL Week 3 sees boost in TV ratings

Last year, Reuters reports the week 3 matchup between the Chicago Bears and the Dallas Cowboys produced a 12.9 rating nationally.

The president tweeted over the weekend: "NFL attendance and ratings are WAY DOWN".

The battle over NFL ratings has exploded during Week 3 of the season with President Donald Trump tweeting that the ratings are "way down" because of athletes protesting the national anthem.

The decrease mirrors a trend of down ratings for the National Football League as a whole nationally through the first three weeks of the season.

The Nielsen figures also don't include numerous Sunday afternoon games that are shown to a regional audience, but not a national one.

As for the Monday Night Football game, a 28-17 win by the Cowboys, Dallas rang in a 9.2 rating on ESPN and a 19.8 rating on WFAA-ABC, while Phoenix delivered a 13.6 rating on ESPN and 8.6 rating on KUTP-IND.

THE FACTS: NFL games shown to a national audience averaged 16.04 million viewers for the first two weeks of this season, down 11 percent from the 18.1 million people who watched during the same period a year ago, the Nielsen company said. Trump acknowledged the popularity of the weekend's pregame shows in a tweet posted on Tuesday morning. But it is far more likely that whatever Trump attempted to spur did not play a major factor in last night's incremental, predicable ratings drop. The controversy could be bad news for television networks, if vast numbers of viewers decide to tune out all at once.

CBS, which had the doubleheader on Sunday, reported an increase with a huge spike for its pregame show.

The President telling those who attended a rally on Friday in Huntsville, AL that those National Football League players who kneeled in protest to the treatment of African-Americans should be fired.

Many of the Washington Redskins took a knee before Sunday night's game against the visiting Oakland Raiders. Those opposed to the protests have said it is disrespectful to the military and flag. ESPN's "Sunday NFL Countdown" opened its show with 22 minutes of Trump conversation, creating some "honest television and the best discussion of the issue" yesterday.

NBC's ratings numbers do not include digital and live streaming.

Trump's comments on Friday night shined a spotlight on the league and the protests, leading the networks to change up their planned broadcasts of games and the anthems preceding them.
