'Star Trek: Discovery' debut led to record sign-ups for CBS's streaming service

CBS wants Star Trek: Discovery to be must-watch TV, and they've certainly put their money where their mouth is.

"Star Trek: Discovery" premieres at 8 p.m. Sunday evening on CBS, with all subsequent episodes streaming on CBS All Access, the network's digital subscription video-on-demand and live-streaming service.

In a recent interview, Discovery co-creator Alex Kurtzman said that a Season 2 will take a while, but that there's very good reason for that.

As the premiere of Star Trek: Discovery approached, the internet was buzzing with news and rumors surrounding the content and theory of the new series, and nothing seemed to have more people talking than the fact that those behind the show were determined to break some of Gene Roddenberry's rules. CBS All Access ain't Netflix, after all. But Shatner had nothing but praise for Star Trek: Discovery - particularly for Jason Isaacs, who stars as Captain Lorca.

Star Trek returns to TV with Star Trek: Discovery offering up the first new Trek adventures on the small screen in more than 20 years.

With all due respect to Enterprise's choice of "Faith Of The Heart" as its theme song, we miss Star Trek's natural choice of orchestral opening to its shows. Short of that, I hope they enjoy seeing the events of Discovery through a different light, and gain a new perspective on characters they meet in the show.

Loyal fans of Star Trek were waiting with bated breath for the latest series in the franchise.

The Klingons of Star Trek have a long, storied history of having their long, storied history explored and evolved every time we see them. Star Trek isn't Star Trek if it isn't examining us, and Discovery looks to keep the Gene Roddenberry flame lit in that regard. It's out there, though, so spoilers are out there too, revealing what happened next to First Officer Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin Green) and Captain Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh).

The way modern title sequences go, this one is actually pretty unique for a Trek series.

One of the core tenets of the myriad versions of Star Trek over the last 50 years has been peaceful conflict resolution and examining why people - and various alien species - battle over differences instead of celebrating commonalities. I am also heartened that other characters of color (Rekha Sharma's "Commander Landry" and Maulik Pancholy's "Dr. Nambue") will join her as the series progresses.

After a 12-year absence from primetime TV, Star Trek is finally back on air.

It's just something of an in-joke among Star Trek writers that developed out of nowhere. The acting is good; there's room for improvement, and I'll be interested to see how the acting comes into focus when the visual effects aren't at the forefront.
