Federation Internationale de Football Association set to call ceasefire with poppy pushers

England will wear Poppies against Germany

The decision by football's world governing body comes after all four Home nations were fined a year ago when they ignored the ban on players wearing slogans or symbols which are considered to be personal, political or religious.

Instead, the sport's administrators sought an urgent meeting with Federation Internationale de Football Association bosses to press their case, arguing that the poppy is neither a political nor a religious symbol - and argue that the ban should be ditched.

Worldwide football chiefs are to lift the controversial ban on wearing the commemorative poppy by the home nations.

It has yet to be negotiated whether the poppies will be attached to black armbands or be allowed as part of the shirt.

England are due to play two World Cup qualifiers in early October and then may play Germany in a friendly at Wembley in November and it is understood the German FA has given permission for the wearing of poppies.

There was widespread incredulity when Federation Internationale de Football Association fined England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland for their use of the poppy symbol 10 months ago. As long as the opposition teams agree in advance, poppies can be worn by England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland for matches on or around Remembrance Day on November 11.

But the ban is now set to be lifted by world football's governing body.

FIFA's stance resulted in widespread condemnation in Britain, with Prime Minister Theresa May calling it "utterly outrageous".

The new rule will reportedly go through ahead of England's upcoming friendly against Germany, which will be played on November 10.

The issue looked likely to be pursued in the courts at one stage after Fifa sanctioned the UK's football associations for using the poppy late a year ago.

"It is completely right that footballers and fans alike should be able to wear poppies with pride, as a tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of our serviceman and women".

But now, 10 months later, Federation Internationale de Football Association has sent new guidance that appears to allow symbols and slogans that could be interpreted as political, so long as they are not related to political parties or governments.
