BYU starts selling caffeinated soda on campus

A welcome sign to Brigham Young University in Provo Utah

"I drank a lot of caffeinated beverages while I was here but none of them was purchased on campus", said Christopher Jones, 34, a visiting BYU history professor and former student. While students there toast with cans of cola, sodas are still hard to come by at BYU's Idaho campus. The Mormon church-owned private university still will not sell highly caffeinated energy drinks, but will offer "freestyle" Coca-Cola machines allowing personalization of sodas.

For the first time since the 1950s, Brigham Young University students are now able to purchase caffeinated soda on campus, and they can not freaking handle it. So why the change, which will begin with the sale of canned and bottled soft drinks while campus soda fountains are adjusted?

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints directs members to generally avoid alcohol and beverages such as coffee and tea as part of an 1833 revelation from Mormon founder Joseph Smith that member should not consume "hot drinks".

Monahan said he isn't quite sure to what extent the decision will affect his business, as Dr. Pepper is the company's highest seller.

"Until more recently, dining services rarely received requests for caffeinated soda", dining services head Dean Wright answered on the page.

BYU has been "caffeine-free" since the 1950's. "It's been a big game changer, even just day one", said Mckay Murphy, a junior statistics major from Springville, Utah.

In 2012, amid the presidential campaign featuring prominent church member and Republican candidate Mitt Romney, the church leaders issued a statement clarifying that caffeine itself was not prohibited.

BYU's soft-drink contract is with Coca-Cola.

The same can't be said of the university's campus in Rexburg. "It's been ridiculous that we couldn't have caffeinated soda on campus". "And, I mean, who really needs the extra sugar?" said a BYU-Idaho student.

"You youths will never understand the struggle we went through", Whiteley wrote jokingly in a Facebook post.
