Minnesota, Wisconsin among states whose election systems were targeted by hackers

Washington. The FBI is warning state officials to boost their election security in light of evidence that hackers breached the election systems of a pair of states. The Aug. 18 2016

Trevor Timmons, chief information officer for the Colorado Secretary of State's Office, says information that a Department of Homeland Security agent passed along Friday didn't explicitly mention Russian Federation but that it otherwise mirrored a warning federal officials gave Congress over the summer that did. The Department of Homeland Security called Wyman personally to tell her of the activity, he said.

Russian hackers tried unsuccessfully to access Washington's election systems before the 2016 general election, according to the state Secretary of State's Office.

"They did not exploit any vulnerabilities", he told The Associated Press. Officials are now working to improve voter security in future elections.

The state Elections Commission said Homeland Security gave a description of the attempted hack.

Both items were to be discussed at an Elections Commission meeting earlier this week.

Dean says the scan targeted the state's computer network generally, and not the election board network specifically.

One thing the state is considering is whether to mandate that local clerks meet minimum security requirements for hardware and software they use, Haas said. After his win, Trump created a commission headed by Vice President Mike Pence to investigate voter fraud nationwide.

The challenges are particularly acute in Wisconsin, he said, where elections are not centrally run but instead handled locally by 1,853 municipal clerks.

"We are very confident in the security of our elections systems here in ME, and pleased to finally have confirmation that we were not among the 21 states that were targeted in 2016", Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap said in a statement. Walker is expected to seek a third term and Democratic U.S. Sen.
