DHS banned Kaspersky software from all government systems

Kremlin condemns US ban on Kaspersky Labs software

The department states if there are ties between Kaspersky or any of its workers to the Russian government, it could compromise U.S. National Security.

But according to The New York Times, Elaine C. Duke, acting secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, has ordered federal agencies to develop plans to remove Kaspersky software from the government's systems in the next 90 days.

US federal agencies are being told to stop using computer software supplied by Kaspersky Lab because of concerns about ties between company officials and the Kremlin and Russian spy operations. Kaspersky Lab reportedly has around 400 million customers worldwide, many of whom are based in the U.S., Kaspersky Lab also has a well-established business analyzing and investigating cyberthreats.

Kaspersky Lab maintains that "all accusations brought against us are baseless", the company said in a statement quoted by TASS.

In a statement accompanying its directive, DHS said it was "concerned about the ties between certain Kaspersky officials and Russian intelligence and other government agencies, and requirements under Russian law that allow Russian intelligence agencies to request or compel assistance from Kaspersky and to intercept communications transiting Russian networks".

Bloomberg suggested that the tools not only deflected cyber-attacks, but also captured information about the hackers launching them, to pass on to Russian intelligence services. "Applaud DHS for heeding my call to remove all Kaspersky products from fed agencies".

Eugene Kaspersky says U.S. users have nothing to fear from his company, despite a government ban.

Best Buy pulled Kaspersky software products from its shelves in the last several weeks.

But he denied that his company is involved in any Russian spying.

Asked by Reuters whether there was a smoking gun showing Kaspersky Lab had provided intelligence to the Russian government, Joyce replied: "As we evaluated the technology, we decided it was a risk we couldn't accept". "This wasn't an easy action for the United States government to take, and it will also have significant ramifications for corporations that use Kaspersky", explained Hamerstone, who is the Practice Lead for the Governance, Risk, and Compliance division at security consultant TrustedSec.

"The objective of this hearing is to conduct oversight of the cybersecurity posture of the federal government, and examine the extent to which the federal government utilizes your company's products", Rep. Darin LaHood (R-Ill.), chairman of the subcommittee on oversight, wrote in the letter to Kaspersky.
