JJ Abrams to direct Star Wars: Episode IX

'Star Wars Episode IX' loses director Colin Trevorrow

It will be a return to the Star Wars universe for the director, who oversaw the launch of the new era of the film series in 2015 when he directed The Force Awakens.

"Episode IX" was the second "Star Wars" project to lose a director this year.

"Rian Johnson decided not to take the offer to come back and replace the recently departed Colin Trevorrow on Star Wars: Episode IX", Deadline reports. Names are being thrown around for helming the Star Wars film, and one person in particular keeps coming up: Rian Johnson.

Lucasfilm reported last week that the company and Trevorrow had mutually chosen to part ways citing differing visions for the project.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi arrives in theaters on December 15, 2017.

As the director of "The Force Awakens", Abrams rebooted "Star Wars" to largely glowing reviews from fans and more than $2 billion in box office.

Whether those rumors were true or not, the issue still stands that there is now a vacancy in the director's slot for the last installment of the "Star Wars" trilogy.

Abrams will be completing the sequel trilogy by directing and co-writing the film with Chris Terrio. Fans are also hoping he'll be able to deliver a fresh take rather than a retread of Return of the Jedi given the fact many see The Force Awakens as a soft-remake of A New Hope. According to The Hollywood Reporter, during a press interview, Johnson was asked if he had any interest in doing Episode IX.

Trevorrow and Disney could not see eye-to-eye in regards to the script of the last installment in this latest "Star Wars" trilogy, sources say, and made a decision to part ways before getting further along in pre-production. There is little doubt he will be given great creative control over what exactly Episode IX will finally look like. Now, just after that news broke, it has been revealed that the studio has chose to bump back the release date for Star Wars 9.

Kennedy, the president of Lucasfilm, adds that she is excited to be working with the veteran director.
