Cohn's Chances Of Becoming Fed Chair Reportedly Fell With C'Ville Remarks

Cohn out as possible Fed chairman - WSJ

The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday evening that Donald Trump is "unlikely to nominate" Cohn, citing "people familiar with the president's thinking".

Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen's term expires in February 2018, leaving Trump with an increasingly narrow window to make his pick.

Trump's decision for Fed chair may come down to whether he would rather retain Yellen, despite her defense of banking regulation after the economic crisis, or choose someone new who may agree with him on the need for banking deregulation but also look for quicker interest-rate hikes.

The White House didn't immediately return HuffPost's request for comment.

Another administration official said Trump was "considering several candidates" for the Fed.

Mr Trump was widely criticised for blaming "many sides" for the Charlottesville violence, and Mr Cohn stood with him during a news conference in NY days after the rally when the President said there were "very fine people" on both sides of the rally, which was attended by neo-Nazis.

A White House official cautioned that Mr. Cohn, a former Goldman Sachs executive, may be able to fix his relationship with the president.

But the critique to the FT caught Trump off guard, the Journal reported - and he now "visibly bristles" at the mention of Cohn. In an August interview with the Financial Times, Cohn criticized Trump, saying the administration "can and must do better".

As a member of the "Big Six", Cohn is one of two administration officials representing the administration in tax reform deliberations with congressional GOP leaders.

Cohn, who is Jewish, told the Financial Times that the administration must do more to condemn neo-Nazis.
