Stacy Lewis donates $195000 prize to Houston Relief Fund

Lewis, who is poised to win her first tournament in three years, is donating her prize money, win or lose, to the victims of the storm once known as Hurricane Harvey which has killed at least 42 people and unleashed massive flooding that damaged up to 50,000 homes in Houston. "I was able to go 4-under par at that point and that was really important and helped me get to 10-under par today".

Chun In-Gee, who is seeking her first victory of 2017 after four runner-up finishes, fired a six-under 66 to grab the first-round lead at the LPGA Tour's Portland Classic on Thursday.

Instead, the American golfer had another goal on her mind: to donate her Cambia Portland Classic winnings to the Houston Relief Fund set up in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. Her sponsor, KMPG, also pledged to match the donation.

Lewis played brilliant, inspired golf breaking through to end her three-year winless spell.

And Chun has more than a fair chance of doing so, as she won it past year.

When the race against In Gee Chun grew tight on Sunday, Lewis gave the wheel to a greater force. She didn't know he had made the trip to OR until he appeared on the green after hiding out in the Golf Channel tower during the round. She likes the tree-lined course and says it is not only pleasing to the eye but ideal for her game.

"It's fantastic how that's all I had worked for over the past three years - about getting the win, and yet that was the last thing I thought about on Sunday".

Altomore, who made just one bogey Sunday, said she was "really happy" with her result. She broke down in tears on the 18th when she saw him.

But Chun was unable to find the birdie she needed over the final two holes to force a play-off, and Lewis held her composure to complete an emotional win with her 11th consecutive par.

Though a fierce competitor and a frequent finalist, she is also inconsistent, and has failed to finish in the top-ten in five consecutive tournaments, starting from the KPMG Women's PGA Championship in June.

"I'm excited to get the monkey off my back and just to know I can do it", Lewis said. Last year's victor, Brooke M. Henderson, edged out Lewis by four strokes for the championship and a $195,000 share of the winnings.

A South Korean player had won each of the past five LPGA tournaments, dating back to Park Sung-hyun's victory at the U.S. Women's Open on July 16.

"You go through all the emotions of finishing second when sometimes it's your fault and sometimes it's not, and things just don't seem to ever go your way and you get really frustrated at times", Lewis said. "It's nice to see yourself do that again". "Gerrod went through all of that with me, and it was probably as hard on him as it was on me".
