Cabinet reshuffle to take place on Sunday morning

BJP chief Amit Shah

Though tight-lipped, Bharti cited her health as the reason behind her resignation. "The media sought my reaction on reports in circulation since yesterday". The Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) in a series of tweets said that PM Modi appreciated the efforts put in by Central and state officials for smooth implementation of the GST regime and "desired that the benefit of GST should percolate to the common man". He is also likely to be adjusted in one of the vacant Raj Bhavans as a Governor.

He is well over 75, the age limit in the BJP for ministers.

NDTV reported that Rudy was asked to resign by the party.

It is not possible to read Prime Minister Narendra Modi's moves in advance. He is expected to be given an organisational assignment in the BJP, sources close to him told PTI.

Kulaste tendered his resignation on Thursday. This means Modi can add nine more ministers for now while replacing as many existing ministers with new ones as he likes.

Cabinet reshuffles and Assembly elections are correlated to a large extent.

From the party, the elevations are reportedly tailored to cater to the aspirations of the poll-bound States, including Karnataka, from where veteran MP Prahlad Joshi and Suresh Angadi's names are doing the rounds. The BJP's much touted policy of "one-person-one-office" would have been violated had Pandey continued as a minister.

Similarly, based on performance, five ministers of state with independent charge are likely to be elevated to cabinet rank. Hectic discussions were on since the past two days regarding the Modi Cabinet reshuffle.

Rajya Sabha MP Vinay Sahasrabuddhe is another likely candidate for elevation to the Cabinet, as are party veteran Om Mathur and MP from Baghpat Satyapal Singh, Rakesh Singh or Prahlad Patel and Mahesh Girri. At least two members of the JD (U) are also likely to join.

If AIADMK eventually decides to join the government, a strong possibility, P Venugopal and V Maitreyan, may be the likely faces of the southern party in the Cabinet.

While Jaitley shedding the defence portfolio is a distinct possibility, Dr Harshavardhan, who is holding more than one portfolio, may also be relieved of one.

Clear pointers to the cabinet reshuffle had begun emerging on Thursday with Union finance minister Arun Jaitley indicating at a press briefing that he may not hold the additional charge of the defence portfolio for very long. The total number of ministers in the council can not exceed 81.

The Cabinet is now 73-strong, but it can go up to 81 members and still be within the Constitutional cap of 15 per cent of the strength of 545 Lok Sabha members.
