Google abandons Project Tango, takes on Apple's ARKit with hardware-independent ARCore

With ARCore you could animate characters that react to the light in the room. Google

This, of course, is in response to Apple's recent announcement that ARKit-an augmented reality developer's kit-would be released ahead of the iOS 11 launch.

While Google's ARCore will only be compatible with certain Android devices, it does not require any new hardware that is not already found in the latest smartphones. In order to make their AR system famous, they would have to ask their phone makers to use certain parts because it may be impossible for them to account for a variety of Android phone cameras.

Environmental understanding within ARCore is capable of detecting horizontal surfaces and responds with a map for placing objects. Light estimation allows developers to light virtual objects in ways that match surroundings, making them appear more realistic.

The race to create appealing phone-based AR is on and even companies such as Facebook are developing their own technology. It is now available on the Pixel and Samsung's S8, running 7.0 Nougat and above, and Android is targeting 100 million devices at the end of the preview. Google is working with manufacturers like Samsung, Huawei, LG, ASUS, and others to make that happen "with a consistent bar for quality and high performance".

Users that used Tango development software in the past should switch to this newest build - essentially Tango's replacement. The OS is now working on a Visual Positioning Service (VPS), which will enable world-scale AR experiences.

Google on Tuesday unveiled ARCore, its answer to iOS 11's ARKit. Tango uses multiple cameras and sensors in order to properly function, which boosts the cost, size, and weight of the device. You see, while virtual reality immerses you into a space, replacing everything you see in a physical world, AR takes the world around you and adds virtual objects over it.

Yes, ARCore will probably arrive to millions of Android devices, but only if certain conditions are met. First, motion tracking. With ARCore, the phone's camera can observe and gather data about the room in order to determine the position and orientation of the phone as it moves about.

But ARCore is the company's boldest project yet. These custom browsers will allow developers to build AR-enhanced websites, which can be run on both Android/ARCore or Apple's iOS/ARKit. Google has also released a range of experiments demonstrating its capabilities. "We believe the accessibility of Augmented Reality presents a unique opportunity to reach a massive global audience through innovative applications and new possibilities for content delivery".

Google has come out with yet another innovation through the Android OS by revealing the tools that assist in the creation of 'augmented reality apps' for the mobile devices using the above said OS.
