Samsung confirms it's working on an Amazon Echo competitor

Samsung has released their long-awaited voice assistant Bixby, in Australia

Samsung has expanded availability of its voice assistant Bixby's voice capabilities to more than 200 countries globally, including the UK, Australia and Canada. The release date for India is still unknown.

Samsung plans to continue expanding Bixby's voice capabilities to additional countries, languages, devices, features and third-party applications.

Introduced as the most significant feature of Galaxy S8 early this year, Bixby had been delayed twice since its decided launch month.

Bixby's Spotify integration will allow owners of the Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8 Plus, and the upcoming Galaxy Note 8 to play and discover music using the service through voice commands, being able to simply tell Bixby which song, album, playlist, or station they want to listen and having the digital assistant do the rest.

Koh told CNBC Samsung has been in development on the speaker and that it will likely be formally announced "soon".

A button on the side of the Galaxy S8 allows Bixby to be activated.

However, with Amazon Echo and Google Home in a fierce arms race to one-up each other, (and Apple's Siri-powered HomePod arriving on store shelves this December) we hope the smart speaker market isn't too crowded in time for the supposed Vega's launch - for Samsung's sake. Unless you speak Korean, you'll want to opt for the US English option. In an interview with CNBC, mobile division chief DJ Koh has confirmed that his company is working on a smart speaker. On the home appliance side, Samsung has a substantial number of devices for sale that feature smart home functionality and also has its own SmartThings standard for networked local connectivity among products.
