Teachers, scientists prepare for total solar eclipse

Solar Eclipse 2017 You’ll be able to watch it from ridiculous heights thanks to these balloons

The vast changes in technology between the eclipse of 1979 and the one coming up on August 21 are also significant, Des Jardins said.

In the Chippewa Valley, there will be a partial eclipse, where the movement of the moon blocks most of the sun. Total eclipses last two to 10 minutes in a given location.

A narrow band of the lower 48 from OR to SC will have the opportunity to see a total eclipse.

"We talk about it a lot but a lot of us haven't seen one or don't know exactly what happens", said Sally Chilson, the library's learning and literacy coordinator. This event, a total solar eclipse, will be "turning daylight into twilight, causing the temperature drop rapidly".

A total eclipse is rare and only visible on a very small portion of the Earth's surface, a path roughly 70 miles wide known as the path of totality.

The two planes will launch from Ellington Field near NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston and will observe the total eclipse for about three and a half minutes each as they fly over Missouri, Illinois and Tennessee, NASA said. Observers outside this path will still see a partial solar eclipse where the moon covers part of the sun's disk. Astronomers call this a total solar eclipse. "The sun is just so bright that there are things we can not see except for when the light is mostly blocked out for us".

36525 (Mobile County) - The eclipse will peak at 1:33 p.m. CDT when the moon obscures 81.9 percent of the sun.

The glasses, which are created to protect viewers' eyes from the damaging rays of the sun, will be distributed at strategic locations on the campus on the day of the eclipse.

"Eclipse Over Clemson" will also feature several speakers, including Clemson University President James Clements, Founding Dean of the College of Science Cynthia Young, renown "eclipse-chaser" Rick Brown, and others.

If you buy eclipse glasses, be sure that they are made by one of the five companies the American Astronomical Society has certified as safe for use.

The planetarium will host a special public program, "A Total Solar Eclipse Experience", at 1 p.m. Saturday July 29, August 5 and August 12. Special Eclipse Viewing Glasses will be distributed. Pacific Daylight Time and ending near Charleston, South Carolina, at 2:48 p.m.
