Qualifying session of 2017 Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku

Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas was the fastest to finish the third free practice for the Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix here on Saturday.

Hamilton banished memories of a dismal qualifying session in Baku past year, when he clipped the barrier, to grab pole with a time of 1:40.593 despite running wide at Turn 16.

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton won the pole position in the qualifications for the Grand Prix of Azerbaijan.

Kimi Raikkonen was more than one second behind Hamilton, qualifying third ahead of his Ferrari teammate Sebastian Vettel.

Red Bull had hoped to mount a challenge in qualifying, having topped both Friday sessions with Max Verstappen, but could only manage fifth with Verstappen and 10th with Daniel Ricciardo after he made contact with the wall in the final part of qualifying.

Force India took sixth and seventh with Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon respectively, with Williams directly behind as Lance Stroll, fresh from his first F1 points in Montreal, outpaced veteran team-mate Felipe Massa for the first time. Deciding to stay out and keep his tyres hot, he had another go at a timed lap.

With only one lap to complete after the red flags, Hamilton made the greater improvements to take pole position over Bottas by 0.434 of a second.

Hamilton was unhappy with his tyres throughout but Bottas enjoyed a more straightforward session, gradually improving his times over several laps on the supersoft tyres. It was a lot of pressure.

"That was one of the most exciting laps that I've had all year", he told Sky Sports.

"Coming down to the last corner I was just thinking "please be enough". It is probably difficult for the public to understand why we are struggling but these tyres are really hard and we are trying all these things to get some temperature in the tyre, weaving like insane. "Going into the race we have a fantastic starting position and I'm expecting a good fight with Lewis".

"The result is okay but I'm not entirely happy", the four-times Formula One champion said. "This morning, we didn't know if those changes were going to be right or not. A big thank you to the team who stayed late last night to get the vehicle to where it is today - they did a fantastic job".

"I'm no fan of excuses, I could have done a bit better but probably P3 was the maximum".

The chequered flag flew and Alonso, Grosjean, Ericsson, Vandoorne and Palmer were eliminated in Q1.

Jolyon Palmer was not able to post a time and missed qualifying after his Renault caught fire in final practice.

The Toro Rosso cars claimed row six - but Carlos Sainz Jr. will drop three-places on the grid thanks to his Canadian GP penalty - ahead of Haas' Kevin Magnussen and Renault's Nico Hulkenberg.
