When Does Ramadan 2017 End? What is Eid al-Fitr?

Eid ul-Fitr, which means "festival of breaking the fast", marks the end of the Muslim holy fasting month of Ramzan.

Muslims also observe Ramadan in remembrance of the month the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Mohammed.

Every year thousands of Bangla speaking Muslims in Bangladesh and other parts of the world eagerly wait to listen to the song played on radio and television after the sighting of the new moon of the Islamic month of Shawal at the end of the fasting month of Ramadan.

"Many people, Muslims and non-Muslims alike, visit Lakemba for the Middle Eastern and Asian food that is on offer, and the atmosphere it provides during Ramadan", the council spokesman told AAP. Organised either within one's home or in a public space, it is a time for grand eating and merrymaking.

General secretary Saiyad Hussain in a release said - "If the new moon is sighted EID-UL-FITR will Insha-Allah be celebrated on Monday 26th June, 2017, otherwise on Tuesday 27th June, 2017".

Eid (Festival) is most important, and the five pillars of Islam are Shahada (Faith), Salat (Prayer), Zakat (Charity), Sawm (Fasting) and Hajji (Mecca). Muslims wear new clothes and celebrate the day, which marks a moment of giving thanks and reflecting on completing a month-long fast.

The Ministry has posted lists of hundreds of mosques and prayer-grounds on its Twitter account that were prepared to hold Eid Al Fitr prayers across the country. The committee did not receive any report about sighting the crescent moon.

Turkey, meanwhile, a country that is officially secular, uses astronomical calculations to decide the start and end of Ramadan.

"We've seen an unprecedented spike in anti-Muslim rhetoric and anti-Muslim sentiments since the November election, but I think that goes hand-in-hand with the spike in hate targeting all minority groups, not just American Muslims", he said.

For June 24, the astronomers predicted the moon can be seen after 19-26 minutes of Sunset in most Muslim countries across the world. Along with the Arab states, United States, United Kingdom, Canada and European countries too have finished counting the similar number of Ramadan days.

Nyasa Times wishes the Muslims a blessed Eid.

According to Anny Ting, host of the Eid celebration, the money envelope is called "Amplop putih" in Indonesia, which is available in green, white, and red.
