Residents evacuated from five London tower blocks over safety fears

A local London council has made a decision to evacuate some 800 households in apartment buildings it owns because of safety concerns following the devastating fire that killed 79 people in a west London high-rise.

"Camden Council is absolutely determined to ensure that our residents are safe and we have promised them that we will work with them, continue to act swiftly and be open and transparent", Gould said in a statement.

The council had already announced that it would immediately begin preparing to remove cladding from five towers on the estate discovered in checks following the fire in north Kensington which killed at least 79 people.

"The Grenfell fire changes everything - we need to do everything we can to keep residents safe".

Residents are being moved out tonight and sent initially to a rest centre at Swiss Cottage Library before council workers allocate them accommodation in hotels or, if possible, with family and friends.

Detective Superintendent Fiona McCormack says officers have seized documents in the investigation into the fire.

The government has ordered immediate testing of the Hotpoint fridge freezer that was involved.

The Chalcots estate has five tower blocks - four 22 storey blocks and one 18 storey block.

They the owners of these Fridge Freezers to complete a form and "we will update when further information is available".

'Last night the Chief Executive and I led a public meeting to listen to the concerns held by residents of the Chalcots estate.

It came as four more victims of Grenfell Tower were formally identified, taking the known victims of the fire to nine. At least 79 people died in the June 14 fire, which engulfed the building so quickly overnight that firefighters were unable to reach numerous victims.

Tests on the building's material as part of the police investigation were "small scale", the officer said, but added: "All I can say at the moment is they (tiles and insulation) don't pass any safety tests".

Buildings in London, Manchester and Plymouth are among those where problem cladding has been identified.

London police are considering filing manslaughter charges related to the fire.

While the death toll remains at 79, Ms McCormack addressed concerns that many more had died and were unaccounted for in official figures.

The cheap cladding was blamed for the fire spreading from one fourth floor flat and engulfing the entire building in the early hours of June 14. "We did our best I promise".
