FP1 - Red Bull one-two in Baku as Perez hits the wall

Force India driver Sergio Perez, who crashed on Turn 8 in the first practice, nearly ploughed straight back into the same barrier in the second.

"Practice was good today", said Ricciardo.

Daniil Kvyat rounded out the top ten for Toro Rosso ahead of Williams' Lance Stroll, the two Haas drivers, Nico Hulkenberg's Renault and the McLaren of Stoffel Vandoorne.

Valtteri Bottas: "Practice one was quite tricky: we were struggling with the setup of the auto and it wasn't so well balanced".

Elsewhere, Daniel Ricciardo was third in the sister Red Bull, with Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen fourth.

The third and final free practice session takes place at 11am (UK time) on Saturday ahead of qualifying at 2pm. He finished the second session in 10th. "It's just a case of getting our heads together tonight to work out exactly how to extract that pace".

Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas of Finland steers his vehicle during the first free practice at the Formula One Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku, Azerbaijan, Friday, June 23, 2017. "We'll work hard and if we can find those gains we'll be right up there fighting for pole position".

Hamilton, a victor last time out in Canada, failed to set a time on the super-soft tyre, the quickest of the three Pirelli compounds available here, after falling foul to Sergio Perez's crash and then traffic.

However with the session all but over the youngster made a mistake at Turn 1 and went sideways into the barriers.

Four-time Verizon IndyCar Series champion Scott Dixon has some advice for two-time Formula 1 champion Fernando Alonso if the McLaren F1 driver considers a jump to IndyCar in the future.Be prepared to.

The first practice got underway under a clear sky with track temperatures at a blistering 54 degrees C (129 degrees F). Grosjean's problems saw him end the session bottom of the times, with his struggles resulting in a number of expletives being used over team radio.

The 6-kilometer (3.7-mile) Baku circuit, which glides through the city's medieval walls and passes the Caspian sea, has F1's fastest top speed and is also one of the trickiest.

They call the Baku street track a circuit of two halves, because some of it is frankly Mickey Mouse with tight corners and limited space, and some blisteringly fast.

Meanwhile, French driver Romain Grosjean was slowest and ranted constantly about brake trouble in his Haas vehicle.

In the opening practice session, Bottas narrowly missed the barriers while Perez mangled both wheels on the right of his vehicle on Turn 8.

The session was an unhappy one for the Englishman as he struggled to "hook up" his auto to the required set-up for the circuit, but at least he kept away from the walls.
