Trump Appears to Confirm That He's Being Personally Investigated

President Donald Trump complained in a furious Friday morning tweet that he was being investigated for firing former FBI Director James Comey and seemed to accuse the deputy attorney general of overseeing a "witch hunt" against him.

"I'm growing increasingly concerned that the president will attempt to fire not only Robert Mueller, the special counsel investigating possible obstruction of justice, but also Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein who appointed Mueller", wrote Democratic Senator from California Dianne Feinstein.

Notably, James Comey, who was sacked by Trump last month, publicly testified this month that Trump had told him to ease off on his former national security adviser Michael Flynn, who was under the FBI investigation for his Russian links.

Comey, who was sacked on May 9, told a Senate panel last week he believed Trump dismissed him to undermine the FBI's Russian Federation probe.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein is now overseeing the investigation into President Trump's campaign, but there's been speculation he could step down. The probe has reportedly expanded to include whether Trump fired Comey in an attempt to obstruct justice.

"You are witnessing the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history - led by some very bad and conflicted people!" the president tweeted.

Given that every morning brings with it some new Trump scandal, one could be excused for not realizing that Trump has yet to be actively investigated.

The media have focused intently on Trump's tweets, accusing him of damaging the "new tone" of civility in Washington after the shooting at the Republican congressional baseball practice.

Mr Pence's office confirmed he had retained Richard Cullen, a former Virginia attorney general and U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, to assist "in responding to inquiries" from Mr Mueller. Mueller is a former Federal Bureau of Investigation director.

The memo sent Thursday asks for records related to foreign travel, contacts with Russian "officials, agents or nationals" and background investigations into the top Trump associates now targeted by Mueller's probe.

Before Trump took to Twitter on Friday, Rosenstein on Thursday issued a perplexing statement of his own, denouncing news stories based on anonymous sources.

Trump has denied any involvement with the Russians during the campaign and has called media reports of collusion a "hoax" and a "phony story".
