Taliban storm Afghan police compound; 1 police dead

3 US troops injured as Afghan soldier opens fire in 'green on blue attack'

A member of an elite Afghan commando unit opened fire on USA -led coalition troops at an Afghan base in the northern city of Mazar-e Sharif, wounding seven US service personnel and at least one Afghan soldier, military officials say. A week earlier, a Taliban infiltrator killed three USA troops in eastern Afghanistan.

The attack on Saturday took place at the Afghan National Army's 209th Corps headquarters in the province of Balkh, located some 540 km to the northwest of Kabul.

A coalition official told CNN that some United States military personnel were wounded and evacuated after what appears to be an insider or "green-on-blue" attack by an Afghan soldier.

The attack ended midday after almost six hours of clashes, said Najib Danesh, the interior ministry's chief spokesman.

A spokesman for Resolute Support in Afghanistan said in a statement that all seven soldiers were medically evacuated and "are being cared for".

So far this year, six USA service members have been killed in combat in Afghanistan, all in Nangarhar in the eastern part of the country, according to statistics compiled by the website icasualties.org.

The Taliban did not directly claim the attack but described the soldier, who was killed, as a "patriot".

Afghanistan has always been facing instability due to continued fighting between the government forces and the Taliban radical movement, which seized vast territories in the Afghan rural areas.

Militants plan so-called green-on-blue attacks in order to destabilize trust between Western service members and local soldiers, but they can also stem from local soldiers lashing out due to personal grievances.

Insider attacks have been occurring with deadly regularity since 2011.

The Taliban and the Islamic State group have carried out a string of attacks in Afghanistan over the last few weeks.

On Thursday, the Pentagon said it will send almost 4,000 additional troops to Afghanistan in order to stop Taliban advances.

There are about 8,500 US troops and 5,000 North Atlantic Treaty Organisation forces in Afghanistan.

"One attacker blew up his vehicle at the entrance of the headquarters, opening the way for two others who opened fire on the security forces while another suicide bomber was killed", Mr Shirzad said.

The Pentagon is set to announce it is sending another 4,000 USA troops to the country to counter the increasingly aggressive insurgents.

One or possibly two attackers were still alive and fighting with police, he said.
