Billy Cosby mistrial: Wife Camille Cosby lashes out at courts, media

Bill Cosby Jury Deadlocked

Bill Cosby exits the Montgomery County Courthouse after a mistrial in his sexual assault case in Norristown, Pa., Saturday, June 17, 2017.

Then, prosecutors would get four months to decide whether they want to retry Cosby or drop the charges.

Cosby has however been granted bail.

More than 50 women have accused Cosby of sexually assaulting them, but the trial has focused on Constand's and another anonymous complainant's testimonies.

Jurors failed to reach a verdict in the aggravated indecent assault case, and Judge Steven O'Neill declared a mistrial Saturday after they deliberated for more than 53 hours.

Cosby closed her statement by thanking her children, grandchildren, supporters, friends, and other family members who "never gave up on [them], despite it all".

Here's a look at the allegations that formed the basis of the charges and how they snowballed more than a decade later into lawsuits, cover stories, and a national conversation on sexual assault.

Gloria Allred, an attorney representing Kelly Johnson - a "bad act witness" and Cosby accuser who testified during the trial - said Cosby should not feel comfortable with the ruling. "It has been restored", said Andrew Wyatt, his spokesman.

Steele instead emphasized his intention to pursue a retrial for the case and said Andrea Constand "indicated" she would be willing to return to the stand to testify.

She also offered some advice to Steele as he prepares for to retry the case: "He better put his sweatband on because he has a lot of work to do".

Cosby, who gave the deposition as part of Constand's lawsuit against him, said he got seven prescriptions for the powerful sedative in the 1970s for the goal of giving them to women with whom he wanted to have sex.

"When there are only two people involved there is always a 'he said, she said" element - so who are you going to believe?

In addition to proving that Cosby assaulted them, Smolla said, they would have to establish that he said something about them beyond denying the allegations, such as calling them known liars or promiscuous.

Less than 48 hours later, the panel informed the judge that they were still deadlocked on all three counts.

District Attorney Kevin Steele spoke to reporters after the judge declared a mistrial Saturday. He said Constand "is entitled to a verdict in this case and the citizens of Montgomery County, where this crime occurred, are entitled to a verdict in this case".

But regardless of which side people came down on, guilty or innocent or somewhere in between, any option was a nauseating prospect because of what Cosby meant to so many people.

It was the statement Cosby made in a deposition to Constand's lawyers in his lawsuit in 2005 that led Pennsylvania prosecutors to charge him in the Constand case.

The accuser in the case is Temple University employee Andrea Constand, who was a guest at Cosby's house in Cheltenham Township on an evening in January 2004. Cosby, 79, claims she consented to their encounter.

Jurors also asked for, and received, a definition of reasonable doubt, the threshold that prosecutors must cross to win a conviction, and reviewed testimony from Constand and her mother about phone conversations they had with Cosby after the encounter.
