'One of those days' as McIlroy finds trouble in Erin Hills rough

Joining Johnson, McIlroy, Day and Willett in going home early are a host of fellow big names. If I don't three-putt, I shoot even.

McIlroy hit just five of 14 fairways on his way to a 6-over 78 in the first round. The Englishman has roared back to life with four straight birdies and is back to being one shot off the lead.

Fowler has the best chance, even though he lost so much ground over the final two hours.

Casey has recorded three consecutive top-six finishes in the Masters, but has just one top-10 in the US Open in 13 attempts.

KEY STATISTIC: The cut, at 1 over, tied a U.S. Open record set in 1990 at Medinah. Hadwin tees off at 8:02 a.m. local time and is three shots behind leader Rickie Fowler.

However, while the world's top three are making other plans for the weekend after missing the cut, college amateur Cameron Champ is proving that massive tee shots can still help get the job done on the long, links-style layout.

Scott's last missed cut at one of the four big dances was the 2015 PGA, and the 36-year-old lamented a misbehaving putter after improving his form on the greens in 2017.

He never would have guessed it. "The putter was hot on the front side to keep me in it, so it's all there, it's just a matter of putting it together and I'm not out of it". "And just unfortunately, this didn't pan out".

It didn't for McIlroy, either.

McIlroy's performance might not be that surprising given that he's played only six PGA Tour events this year and missed most of the last month with a rib injury. "It's the kind of golf course that if you're on point and playing well and you're in the fairways, you really feel like you can be aggressive and attack and make some birdies".

The greens remained receptive on Friday, but began to firm up later in the day.

Schauffele, ranked 352nd in the world, launched his second round with a par after an opening 66 on Thursday. All seven of his birdies came from inside 15 feet.

"Show up for the last six holes, anyway", McIlroy said.

Marc Leishman has maintained his position high on the leaderboard midway through the second round at the US Open.

McIlroy was 4 shots off the cut line and Day a whopping 9 shots removed. He missed almost two months at the start of the year when he was diagnosed with a slight rib fracture, and then the latest break after The Players Championship. Casting aside his own advice, he chose to stay for another day at the U.S. Open.

"I think those two things and a lot of hard work, really".

"I just played bad golf", Day said.

His schedule will pick up immediately.

At Erin Hills, all Johnson could do was go down swinging on a Friday. He is long and straight off the tee and an excellent chipper from closely mown areas around the green.

Hideki Matsuyama and Chez Reavie both shot the rounds of the day, posting seven-under 65s to move to five and four under respectively.

"I know if I hit fairways around here, the course is still soft enough you can get it close and give yourself a lot of looks for birdies", he said. "The execution was not there".
