In 2006, he was arrested for domestic battery and discharge of a firearm after he punched a man's girlfriend "in the face with a closed fist", according to a police report reviewed by The Daily Beast. That case was dismissed. The vast majority of the cases were traffic violations and almost all of them were later dismissed. One conviction in 2009 was for failing to have an electrician's license and another in 1991 was for speeding.

The incident happened March 24, according to sheriff's officials, just days before Hodgkinson presumably left IL for Virginia.

CBS News' Kristin Steve and Laura Strickler report that, according to local court records and incident reports from the St. Clair County Sheriff's Department in Illinois, Hodgkinson had over 20 interactions with law enforcement for minor offenses.

Jeff Weaver, Sanders' former presidential campaign manager, told CNN that Sanders' political staff was trying to get more information.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, (I-Vermont), says he was "sickened" when he learned that the man who allegedly shot several people at a GOP baseball practice early Wednesday in Alexander, Virginia.

Charles Orear, 50, a restaurant manager from St. Louis, said in an interview Wednesday that he became friendly with Hodgkinson during their work together in Iowa on Sanders's campaign. "Violence of any kind is unacceptable in our society and I condemn this action in the strongest possible terms", Sanders said Wednesday morning on the Senate floor. Officials say they're investigating Hodgkinson's whereabouts, associates, web postings and "potential motivations".

When Hodgkinson refused to stop, Schaumleffel called the sheriff's department.

FBI Evidence Response Team members mark evidence at the scene of a multiple shooting in Alexandria, Va., Wednesday, June 14, 2017, where House Majority Whip Steve Scalise of La., and others, were shot at a congressional baseball practice.

Republicans were practicing for Thursday's baseball game against Congressional Democrats. Two law enforcement sources tell NPR's Carrie Johnson that Hodgkinson is the suspect. He was stopped by Capitol Police after firing off several dozen rounds.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms is now conducting urgent traces on two firearms - a rifle and a handgun - from the scene.

Scalise, 51, the No. 3 House Republican leader first elected to the House in 2008, was in stable condition and undergoing surgery.

"Our courageous Capitol Hill police performed a challenging job with incredible skill. America is praying for you, and praying for all the victims".

All of the injured individuals have now been identified. An aide to Rep. Roger Williams, R-Texas, was also shot, the congressman's office said.

Capitol Police said officers who were part of Scalise's security detail returned fire and wounded the shooter, who was taken into custody.
