North Korea blasts U.S. over 'selfish' climate withdrawal

Hawaii county representatives and mayors like Honolulu's Kirk Caldwell also signed a statement declaring their commitment toward the agreement.

States are continuing to fight back against President Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement, with Hawaii becoming the first state to pass a law adopting the goals of the accord. According to the statement, those who have opted in and signed the pledge to continue involvement in the Paris Agreement, "all understand the agreement is a blueprint for job creation, stability and global prosperity and that accelerating the United States' clean energy transition is an opportunity - not a liability - to create jobs, spur innovation, promote trade and ensure American competitiveness".

"The selfish act of the USA does not only have grave consequences for the worldwide efforts to protect the environment, but poses great danger to other areas as well", a statement from the country's foreign ministry says.

Ige signed Senate Bill 559, which "expands strategies and mechanisms to reduce greenhouse gas emissions statewide", the release states. "We are both members of the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy, which represents more than 7,400 cities around the world committed to local climate action".

Ige also signed a bill Tuesday to form a task force to study how agriculture and aquaculture in Hawaii can help sequester carbon dioxide.

"Hawai'i and other Pacific Islands are already experiencing the impact of rising sea levels and natural disasters". Hawaii is one of many U.S. states and cities to affirm the principles of the Paris Accord and agree to uphold the treaty despite the federal government's rejection of it. Hawaii County managing director Wil Okabe emphasized the importance of the laws' passage. The United States is now among only three countries globally who have opted to not participate in the accord.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) says that President Trump badly misrepresented the research of its scientists when he cited their work last Thursday to justify his withdrawal from the Paris Agreement, reported the Reuters news service.

Trump announced the United States' departure from the Paris climate change accord June 1.

In 2015, 195 countries agreed in Paris to set individual targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, with the shared goal of limiting the rise in average global temperatures to less than 2 degrees Celsius.

"The hostile policy of the US against the DPRK has grown so unreasonable and reckless today that they are even coercing other countries to sacrifice their relations with the DPRK under the pretext of ensuring the U.S security".
