Nadal clinches record 10th French Open title

Until Sunday, Stan Wawrinka had an unblemished record in Grand Slam finals - but then he had never faced Rafael Nadal in the Spaniard's favourite arena, Court Philippe Chatrier at the French Open.

Nadal owns 53 clay trophies after adding his tenth at Roland Garros to the 10 he won at both Monte Carlo and Barcelona over the last three months.

But the barrel-chested "Stanimal" was powerless as Nadal turned the final into an exhibition of his clayclourt supremacy - taking his French Open record to an eye-watering 79-2. "In this final, to win the Decima is very, very special. And second, all the effort I have been doing last few weeks to get to my best level again, to get some confidence again, and to win all those matches, some tough matches".

"The nerves, the adrenaline, I feel on the court are impossible to compare to another feeling".

"For me to be here for many years is hard to describe".

Rafael Nadal wins his 10th French Open title with a 6-2 6-3 6-1 victory over Stanislas Wawrinka at Roland Garros.

"I am not the right one to say, but to play 10 finals here is something hard".

"I think today, if you play Rafa, if you're not completely free with what you think and what you're gonna do and not completely relaxed the way you're gonna play, you have no chance". But the 2015 champion could not convert it and it proved to be the only break point he earned all afternoon. "It's something tough to describe when you just say you won 10 French Opens", he said.

He appeared to weather the early storm by swatting away four break points in his second service game, only to then be broken in the next two as the first set disappeared.

The Spaniard did not waste any time in wrapping up the second set as he finished Wawrinka off in 45 minutes. But the 31-year-old King of Clay absolutely dominated this year's event, cruising through seven matches without dropping a single set.

While analysts assessed Nadal's history, his strokes and his long career before the match, Nadal said he didn't focus on the records.

Instead of his usual style, Wawrinka's unforced error count climbed into the double figures by the fourth game, where Nadal's stood at just 12 for the entire match. One, because I play against him, and he puts this doubt in your head when you play against him because he's playing so well.

Nadal, who has been plagued by injuries and a loss of form in recent years, is the first man to win a single Slam on 10 occasions in the Open era.
