Puerto Rico votes for statehood

A government website for the status referendum, Puerto Rico's fifth since 1967, showed 97 percent of roughly 485,000 votes counted so far in favor of becoming the 51st USA state.

Puerto Rico is exempt from the US federal income tax, but it still pays Social Security and Medicare and local taxes and receives less federal funding than USA states.

It's the fifth time Puerto Ricans have voted on the matter, but statehood has never won a clear victory.

She is pro-statehood and is forming a "Friends of Puerto Rico Caucus" that would press for statehood.

"To not vote in a process that has not been validated by any party in Puerto Rico, or by the US government or by anyone outside the New Progressive Party is to respect oneself", he tweeted on Saturday.

Puerto Rico's former governor Rafael Hernandez Colon said in a statement: "A contrived plebiscite fabricated an artificial majority for statehood by disenfranchising hundreds of thousands of Commonwealth supporters". The opposition had called for a boycott of the referendum. "Whatever we might receive in additional federal funds will be canceled by the amount of taxes the island will have to pay". Congress laid out a process through a provision in a 2014 law that said that if Puerto Rico wanted the federal government to pay attention to another status referendum, it had to follow certain rules. While Puerto Ricans are American citizens and contribute to Social Security and Medicare, they do not vote for the USA president, and their single representative in Congress has no vote. This year, it comes on the same day Puerto Ricans vote among three choices: independence, statehood or their current territorial status. He also said that even among voters who supported statehood, turnout was lower this year compared with the last referendum in 2012.

Puerto Rico's governor said the territory will now put its "Tennessee plan" into action, meaning it will choose two senators and five representatives to go to Washington, D.C., to request statehood. In a similar referendum in 2012, before the island's financial troubles deepened, 61% voted for statehood.

Puerto Ricans would also become eligible for the full welfare benefits now available to U.S. citizens living in the 50 states.

About 5.4 million Puerto Ricans live on the USA mainland, a number that is growing because of an exodus of people who can not find jobs or continue school on the depressed island. A parade in New York City featured a man that some deemed a terrorist, and a non-binding referendum in Puerto Rico on the island's political status was boycotted by several parties, including the leading opposition group. Sunday's referendum was the fifth on the territory's status - dating back to 1967.

"We have been a colony for 500 years, and we have had USA citizenship for 100 years, but it's been a second class one", Rossello said.

Those who remain behind have faced new taxes and higher utility bills on an island where food is 22 percent more expensive than the US mainland and public services are 64 percent more expensive.

The current territorial status option received 6,821 votes, or 1.32 percent.
