Maryland, DC to sue Trump over 'disregard for' the Constitution

The attorneys-general of Maryland and the District of Columbia plan to file a lawsuit yesterday alleging that foreign payments to President Donald Trump's businesses violate the USA constitution, according to a source familiar with the situation.

The lawsuit alleges Trump violated anti-corruption clauses and that the U.S. General Service Administration wrongly allowed him to continue to lease the Old Post Office building - home of the Trump International Hotel. The attorneys general accuse Mr. Trump of breaking many promises to keep his presidential responsibilities separate from his business interests, the report said.

Trump announced in January that he would shift his business assets into a trust managed by his sons, in an effort to eliminate potential conflicts of interest. For instance, the president still receives routine updates on the company's finances.

The lawsuit will be filed Monday by the attorneys general of Maryland and Washington in the United States district court for the district of Maryland, the Washington Post reported.

"This case is, at its core, about the right of Marylanders, residents of the District of Columbia and all Americans to have honest government", Frosh, a Democrat, told the Washington Post, which was the first to report about the lawsuit.

This is not the first time Trump has been accused of violating the clause.

Company policy detailed in a new pamphlet suggests that it is up to foreign governments, not Trump's hotels, to determine whether foreign governments self-report their business dealings. Saudi Arabia, the destination of Trump's first trip overseas, also booked rooms at the hotel through an intermediary on more than one occasion since Trump's inauguration. The justice department is seeking to have the suit dismissed.
