'The Mummy' Starts The Dark Universe Off On The Wrong Foot

As any horror movie fan knows, you don't disturb the final resting place of a mummy without paying a price, which is exactly what happens in a wild airborne sequence. Though they're both perfectly fine in "The Mummy", his latest big-screen venture, they're dramatically overshadowed by a fantastic, dynamic trio of supporting cast members. He seems to be playing a stock character, and the details in the script - he's Nick Morton, a member of the military who is more concerned with romancing women and stealing historical artifacts - are sort of irrelevant. What we are left with is a movie that is surprisingly more than just Tom Cruise running and punching mummies in the head, but not enough more to be anything but a dismissible slice of summer entertainment.

"The Mummy", starring Tom Cruise as an adventurer who uncovers the crypt of an ancient cursed princess, is receiving terrible reviews leading to its opening on Friday, with a current score of 20% on Rotten Tomatoes.

"The film does have a tremendous amount of adventure but it has great scares also". He gets so angry, he pulls a lever and the building explodes and that's the end of the movie, and you're like, "I have no idea what just happened, but it was unbelievable!" The Mummy, the first instalment of Universal's The Dark Universe, has drawn flak for its messy plot.

Turns out it would've been better for her to remain buried, as a protective curse brings down the plane carrying Ahmanet, Morton, assistant Chris Vail (Jake Johnson), and historical researcher Jenny Halsey (Annabelle Wallis).

Thought safely entombed in a tomb deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient princess (Boutella) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension. Ahmanet in fact, gets trapped by Dr. Henry Jekyll's (Russell Crowe) team of scientists and soldiers known as Prodigium, and her repeated assaults on those trying to excavate her are pretty much laughable. Nor does it really have anything to do with any mummy that you're thinking about unless you're thinking about a mostly naked Sofia Boutella with some rotting skin.

There's a lot going on at any given moment, which can get overwhelming. A fight between Nick and a transforming Jekyll/Hyde is the movie's most entertaining, playful scene, even though it has nearly no bearing on the story.

"You see her and her daddy and the blood on her face".

Alex Kurtzman's "The Mummy" reboots a franchise I would gladly have dispensed with from the start.

I'm not about to write off the Dark Universe based on this first misstep.
