McCain's fuzzy questions for Comey leave observers puzzled

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., had some explaining to do following head-scratching questioning of former FBI Director James Comey on Capitol Hill.

McCain said he was exhausted during the session, after staying up late to watch the Diamondbacks game Wednesday night.

Comey refused to say whether Trump's alleged subtle threatening of Comey's job, outlined in his prepared opening statement, and the president's request that the FBI drop its investigation of former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn constituted obstruction of justice.

"I know the Republicans are trying to seize on things to distract", he said.

But Thursday Comey told the Senate Intelligence Committee the president fired him because of the FBI's investigation of Russia's attempt to interfere with the election.

"The president also never told Mr. Comey, "I need loyalty, I expect loyalty" in form or substance", Kasowitz said, which also contradicted Comey's testimony under oath.

COMEY: Yes, sir. I can - after the - President Clinton - former President Clinton met on the plane with the attorney general, I considered whether I should call for the appointment of a special counsel, and had decided that that would be an unfair thing to do, because I knew there was no case there.

Comey said he chose to share his memo through another party after Trump wrote on Twitter days after Comey's abrupt dismissal that "James Comey better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press".

Former Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) director James Comey said he chose to speak out on the probe into Mrs Hillary Clinton's e-mail a year ago as he thought his boss, then attorney general Loretta Lynch, had been politically compromised. In the case of Secretary Clinton's emails, Mr. Comey was willing to step beyond his role as an investigator and state his belief about what "no reasonable prosecutor" would conclude about the evidence.

"That investigation was going on". Instead, the Republican senator spent most of his time asking Comey about Hillary Clinton's 2016 email investigation.

And, again, you look back in hindsight, you think should I have resisted harder?

"I'm a little confused", Comey responded. "You reached separate conclusions".

MCCAIN: "That investigation have any involvement of Secretary Clinton or any of her associates is completed?" "I didn't believe she could credibly decline that investigation", Comey replied. "I think that's a double standard there, to tell you the truth".

Numerous viewers who tuned in to hear Comey's testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee hearing were confused by McCain's line of questioning.

Well, of course. The Clinton email investigation ended more than 11 months ago, while the Russian Federation investigation continues.
