Fingers Crossed: Jeff Sessions Threatens to Quit As Tension With Trump Escalates

When asked if the Trump's tweets should be considered official statements from the White House, Spicer appeared incredulous. "If I haven't had a discussion with him about a subject, I tend not to speak about it".

"I have not had a discussion with him about that", Spicer said as sources said Trump is still fuming over Sessions' recusal from the federal investigation into potential ties between Trump campaign associates and Russian Federation.

"The president's going to have a very, very, busy day, as he does all the time, and I think his focus is going to be on pursuing the agenda and the priorities that he was elected to do", Spicer told reporters on Tuesday. Sessions was the first senator to endorse Trump early in the presidential campaign past year when few Republican lawmakers supported the candidate. The official said they wanted to avoid a repeat of what happened when Kellyanne Conway said Trump had confidence in Flynn only to find out hours later that the national security adviser had been pushed out.

Sessions' offer to resign was first reported by ABC News.

The strain between the two began after Sessions recused himself in March from the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Trump's lingering anger on Sessions deepened when a special counsel, spearheaded by Robert Mueller, was formed following Sessions' recusal, to oversee the probe into possible collusion between Russian officials and members of the president's administration.

Trump told people at the time that he anxious the decision would be seen as an admission of defeat - and has continued to express frustrations with the Justice Department's actions.

Sessions was Trump's first supporter in the Senate and was an enthusiastic backer throughout the campaign - standing with Trump through multiple controversies.

Still, tensions linger. On Monday, Trump derided the revised travel ban and criticized his own Justice Department's handling of the controversial case.
