Cedar Park population grew at 12th-fastest rate nationally in 2016

Willis Tower dominates the Chicago skyline

Experts also have noted an overall trend with cities in the South continuing to grow at a faster rate than other US regions.

Phoenix's 2016 estimated population of 1,615,017 ranks it fifth among USA cities in overall population.

Despite losing 8,638 residents (-0.3%), Chicago remains the third largest city with a population of 2.7 million.

But officials and experts cautioned against reading too much into the newest Census figures released this week, which estimate the 2016 populations for municipalities across the nation.

But many Suffolk County towns are shrinking, according to the Census Bureau which estimated Brookhaven Town lost 1,602 people, Islip lost 1,491 and Babylon lost 847.

The Holy City edged out the Capital City, but one other South Carolina City is making news.

2016 marks the highest population estimate Rhode Island has seen since 2010, while Newport County and Newport both saw their highest population estimate in 2010. Mayor Rahm Emanuel's office said the city's population decline started when Rauner began disparaging the city during the 2014 election.

"It's always nice when the city grows", said Allan Rhodes, Paducah city commissioner.

"The big city growth we saw at the beginning of the decade is not quite as evident in the last couple years", said William Frey, a demographer with the Brookings Institution who analyzes census data.

"I don't think it's an apple to apple comparison", said Dr. Yang Yang, a professor at Temple's School of Sports, Tourism and Hospitality management.

The U.S. population as a whole grew from 320,896,618 to 323,127,513 in July 2016, according to the data. And a drop is perhaps to be expected given that IL as a whole saw the biggest population dip in the country, according to figures released late past year. Its 2,400 new residents represent a 2.4 percent increase from 2015.

Birmingham city is now estimated to be home to 212,157 residents.

The city's estimated population growth slowed from a year ago, when the Census Bureau said it climbed by 1.8 percent, or 11,000 residents. That's an increase of more than 13,500 from the 2010 Census and more than triple the population from the 2000 Census report.

Other data released Thursday showed Morgantown overtook Parkersburg as West Virginia's third-largest city.

Only one Midwestern city was among the top 15 fastest-growing cities on the list - Ankeny, Iowa. Its population increased from 126,061 residents in 2015 to 131,947 residents in 2016. Midwest small towns declined by.3 percent on average since 2015.
